  Swami and Friends

  RK Narayan

  Indian Thought Publications [Publisher]

Swami and Friends is the story of ten-year old Swaminathan, a boy full of innocence, wonder, and mischief, and his experiences growing up in the fictional town of Malgudi. He is a student at the British-established Albert Mission School, which stresses Christianity, English literature, and the value of education. Life changes dramatically for young Swami when Rajam - a symbol of colonial power - joins the school, and becomes his close friend. This is far more than a simple narrative of Swami’s adventures- charming and entertaining as they are. By the delicate use of detail sympathetically observed, the author establishes for us the child’s world as the child himself sees it, and beyond the adult community he will one day belong to- in Swami’s case, the town of Malgudi, which provides the setting of almost all Narayan’s later novels.
